Correct tyre pressure is the cheapest way to save fuel — under-inflated tyres can raise fuel consumption by up to 3% and wear out faster. Why Your Own Inflator Beats the Station Pump
With your own inflator, you can check and top up at home every month without waiting — and crucially, before a long trip, not after the tyre already looks flat. It's also a lifesaver in emergencies: a slow puncture far from any station can be pumped up enough to reach a tyre shop.
1. Type: 12V Plug-In or Cordless
A 12V plug-in (using the car's lighter socket) is usually cheaper and never needs charging, but the cable is fiddly and the engine should be running. A cordless model has a built-in battery — tidier, works on motorcycles and bicycles anywhere, but you must keep it charged. For in-car emergency use both work; cordless is more flexible.
2. Pressure Preset & Auto-Stop — the Feature That Matters Most
Look for a digital pressure preset with auto-stop: set (say) 32 psi and the pump stops itself when it gets there. Without it you're standing there watching the gauge — and risking over-inflation. This is the one feature we consider mandatory.
